“Cuyahoga River Bend”

On display at Stella’s Art Gallery in Willoughby, OH as a part of The May Show 2021 – Extended View June 11th – July 5th

This painting was started on location on a cool October morning on the Towpath Trail in the Cuyahoga Valley National Park and was nearly completed while there for two hours. Upon reflection, there were a few sections that needed to be enhanced to make the painting meet its mark. Another half hour of work brought it to its point of completion. Can it be called Plein Air? By some standards, yes. I’d rather finish the painting than have to stop short of completion because of some “rule’. I’m glad I finished it.

“Cuyahoga River Bend II”

After painting for two hours on the painting posted above, I swiveled my easel to capture the view looking to the north on a fresh canvas. I spent about an hour on this painting “Cuyahoga River Bend II” attempting to capture the abstract light and dark shapes and peculiar mixture of colors. I’m pleased to announce that this painting was purchased while on display at the Peninsula Arts Academy “Peninsula Plein Air Fall 2020” juried art competition.

As part of the Peninsula Art Academy Plein Air Fall 2020 juried show, this painting was created in a 2 1/2 hour visit on the towpath trail. The weather was around 50 degrees and being a Saturday morning many hikers and bicyclists went by as I painted off to the side of the trail. It was on view at the Peninsula Art Academy, 1600 Mill Street, Peninsula, OH 44264.

The judge commented that, if hung on your wall, you would be compelled to look at the painting over time and discover different elements to contemplate at each viewing. Both of these paintings are entered into the 10th Annual Plein Air Competition- “Beauty in Bloom”. If you would like to attend the Awards Reception and to see some excellent paintings from local artists that are painted in the Village of Peninsula and the Cuyahoga Valley National Park, it will be June 2nd, 6-9pm at the Peninsula Art Academy, 1600 W. Mill Street, Peninsula, Ohio, 44264. The show will be up from May 25th – June 30th.
